Amidon Planet Podcast: E017 Lessons from Kenya with David Sanders

Published by Adminidon on

You want to go to Kenya?

Yes, yes I do.

To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed at the thought of going to Kenya to visit the schools and the communities that partner with The 410 Bridge. What did I know about Kenya and it’s education system…not a lot…but that was the point The objective of the trip was to learn as much as we could during our trip for the purpose of informing how the U.S. side of The 410 Bridge can best support the efforts of those same schools and communities at improving the education and opportunities of the people who make up those communities…and we learned a lot.

Listen in to this episode of the Amidon Planet Podcast as David Sanders, from The 410 Bridge, and I, discuss our trip and what we learned from the teachers, the schools and the community members we had a chance to interact with.

This is Ms. Faith. ⠀ She is a Champion 4th grade teacher at Ereri Primary School in the Segera Region in Kenya. Being a Champion teacher means Ms. Faith is leading the way as Kenya makes a huge change to their national curriculum to be more learner centered. She seeks out training and then helps to train some of her colleagues in her school and nearby schools.⠀ ⠀ I had the privilege to observe Ms. Faith teach place value using concrete and representational methods to help her fourth graders understand the difference between ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. It was awesome to see her provide opportunities for her students to demonstrate their brilliance. Would love for my @olemissedschool students to see Ms. Faith in action!⠀ ⠀ Ereri Primary School is one of many @410bridge partner schools in Kenya. Check out their website for more information on the awesome work they are doing in Kenya, Haiti, Guatemala, and Uganda.⠀ ⠀ #teachingmathasagape #bethegood
